Greensprings School Shines in Nigeria’s Historic Debut at Scripps National Spelling Bee

Greensprings School has proudly marked an extraordinary milestone in academic achievement as Nigeria participated for the first time in the 100-year history of the Scripps National Spelling Bee USA Finals.

In this inaugural Nigerian season, over 200 participants from 9 schools across Abuja, Lagos, Osun, and Taraba States competed for a chance to advance. Twenty talented students from Greensprings School emerged as finalists in the Nigeria National Finals, underscoring the school’s reputation for academic excellence and dedication to holistic education.

The Semi-Finals, held in December 2024, saw 64 top spellers battle for national recognition and Greensprings proudly accounted for 20 of those bright stars. Several Greensprings students and staff also earned special accolades, including:

The Black Drone Award (Top scorers in Vocabulary Round):

  1. E. Alabi – Lekki Campus
  2. O. Ogunjobi – Anthony Campus
  3. N. Badmus – Ikoyi Campus
  4. O. Ogunjimi – Ikoyi Campus

The Honeybee Award (Youngest Speller):

  1. T. Sesan – Year 2, Anthony Campus

The Buzzer Bee Award (Top 7 advancing spellers):

  1. E. Alabi – Lekki Campus
  2. P. Okesanjo – Lekki Campus

The Beekeeper Award (Most Dedicated School Coach):

  1. Awarded to a dedicated Greensprings teacher

This inaugural effort has not only placed Greensprings School among Nigeria’s top spellers but also highlighted the school’s commitment to fostering a love for language and lifelong learning.

The resilience and brilliance of our students have put Greensprings on the national map. With such a strong showing in our first season, we are confident that Greensprings will be flying the Nigerian flag at the USA Finals very soon.
